An Analysis of Interrelationship between Adolescents¢¥ Alchohol Drinking and Self-mutilation




Abstract
The present study was intended to examine the experience rate and the general characteristics of adolescent¢¥s self-mutilation, and to clarify the correlation between adolescents¢¥ self-mutilation and alcohol drinking.
Data were collected randomly from 8 junior and senior and high schools among 17 schools from 10 district, sampling by disproportional probability sampling procedures.
Subjects surveyed for this study consisted of 1560 students ranging from 12 to 21 years of age.
One hundred sixty two subjects were excluded from this study because of non respondent, thus remaining 1,398 subjects were analyzed.
Data were processed by CDC-174 computer of KAIST using SPSS program and statistically analyzed by chi-square test, and major findings were as follows.
1) The adolescent¢¥s rate of alcohol drinking was 25.4% including social drinkers as 22.8 and alcoholics as 2.6%. The rates of alcoholism were more prevalent both in the male group and in the Seoul students. As their ages increased, prevalence of alcoholism was rising sharply with an increasing tendency at 17 years of age.
2) The rate of self-mutilation among students was 15.7%, and the most frequent body parts of self-mutilation was upper limb(61.6%) including hands(39.7%) wrists(1l.4%) and forehands (10.5%).
3) In the analysis of the surrounding people¢¥s rate of self-mutilation, was most prevalent in their peers(42.9%) including the intimate friends(34.2%) and peer groups(8.7%). From these results, it was concluded that peer pressure was more influential to attempt self-mutilation in the adolescent students.
4) Adolescents, age of onset to start self-mutilation was 14.4 years old, and their major means of self-mutilation were ¢¥fingernails(19. 6%)¢¥. razor blade ¢¥(15.5%)¢¥, and ¢¥bump on window or wall(7.3%)¢¥. About half of the self-muitlators experienced negative feeling after self-mutilation such as the feeling of repentance(25.1%), severe pain(10.5%), the feeling of being punished(7.3%), or depersonalization(5.5%), etc.
5) Their main reasons to attempt self-mutilation were curiosity(23.70%), uncontrolled rage(13.2%) self-hate (12.3%), rebellion toward their parents (5.0%), peer pressure(4. 1%), and self -punishment (3.7%), etc.
6. More alcoholics attempted self-mutilation comparing with the social drinkers or the never drinkers. It was concluded that adolescents alcohol drinking was more closely related with self-mutilation.
7) More alcoholics attempted self-mutilation in their upper limbs, and their major measures were burning with cigarettes or scratching by broken bottle and glass fragments.
8) More alcoholics attempted self-mutilation from peer pressure, and their major motivation were curiosity, uncontrolled rage or changing their appearance.
